Case 02 / Marketplace Operations

Active build

Automating complex marketplace listings for custom vinyl decals.

Decal Design Center sells customizable vinyl products with multiple sizes, colors, images, and marketplace-specific listing requirements. Creating and maintaining those combinations manually made publishing repetitive, cumbersome, and difficult to scale.

The problem

A simple product can become a complicated listing.

Custom decals require structured combinations of size, color, pricing, imagery, and channel-specific metadata. On Etsy, building those variant listings manually meant repeatedly recreating inventory structures and assigning the correct images and options.

The challenge was not simply generating listing copy. The automation needed to construct a valid marketplace product configuration while keeping the underlying product model reusable across channels.

System

Build the product once. Translate it into the marketplace structure automatically.

Etsy automation

The cumbersome part became the workflow.

Variant construction

The workflow creates the marketplace inventory structure from structured product data instead of requiring every variation to be assembled manually.

Image mapping

Product imagery is uploaded and mapped to the appropriate color options as part of the listing process.

Marketplace-specific copy

Channel-specific titles and keywords can be generated without treating the marketplace listing as the canonical product record.

Draft-first publishing

Automated listings remain drafts so the workflow removes repetitive construction while preserving a review boundary before publication.

In progress

Extending the same product model into eBay.

The next stage is actively building the eBay publishing workflow: translating the same canonical product data into a different marketplace's listing, variation, image, and metadata requirements rather than recreating the process from scratch.

That turns the automation from a single-channel script into a reusable marketplace operations layer.

Impact

Repetitive listing construction is now automated.

The Etsy workflow replaces a previously manual, cumbersome variant-listing process with a repeatable system. Quantitative time and throughput measurements will be added as the production dataset grows.

Automate the repetition without losing control of the product.

The marketplace is an output. The product model remains the source of truth.

Managing complex listings by hand?

If the same product information is repeatedly rebuilt across marketplaces, there may be a better system underneath it.
